Although there were stories of doom and gloom in the world of retail for weeks in the run up to Christmas, it’s good to be able to report a positive outcome as we enter 2012.

It has been a rough ride for retailers in the current economy and there have been a mixed bag of reports in recent days. Whilst some major companies’ sales statistics for the Christmas period showed increased sales compared to last year (although last year’s awful weather affecting sales so badly must be considered when making this comparison), others have not fared so well and certainly it appears that margins have been compromised across the board as retailers compete to win customers and sales.

It’s reasonable to assume that smaller independent companies might suffer in the wake of increased competition. The negotiating power that some of the larger competition holds ensures that their trade prices outstrip smaller companies who cannot buy in such bulk. However Heroes For Kids’ sales for the final quarter across all selling platforms (including the main website, Amazon, Play and Ebay) were up 26% on the last year. The Managing Director, Vanessa Fowler, stated:

“We were concerned in the run up to Christmas this year and cautious with our stock management. However we were pleased to see such an increase against last year’s sales figures for the same period. As our business is based entirely online, last year’s weather did not affect us so we can make this comparison on the assumption that conditions were very similar year on year.

We are entering 2012 on a positive note and have many plans for the year ahead. We are keen to expand but we will take care not move away from the basis that the business was built on as this would dilute the strong presence we have in the world of licensed goods. The business was developed in response to a niche we identified for character merchandise and we can still see a clear demand for the range of products we stock.

We have made several new partnerships with major licensors in the last couple of years and are excited about new prospects in discussion at the moment. We are always interested to hear from licensors and brand owners looking to generate a dedicated selling platform.”
